KOFXI Sawakoro Festival 2024
Tournament Report by ATG
Preface
October 2024, once again a German delegation made its way to the Sawakoro Festival. This time, Sensei Enrique couldn't make it, but new player Antser joined us for the trip.
(No, we did not arrive by boat)
- ATG: Oswald/K'/Vanessa(L)
- arit: Ralf/Clark/Jazu(L)
- AD_Ryan: Iori/Kula/Ash(L)
- Antser: Duck/Kyo/K(L)
Before we made our way to Nagoya, we had over a week to spend in Tokyo, meeting Ryoji & Ryuumi at Shinjuku Sportsland twice. As always, we had incredibly fun matches with them - their choice of characters is refreshing, with Ryoji playing Silber, Gai, Ash(L) and more, while Ryuumi used Terry, Yuri, King, Elisabeth and others.
We also visited Game In Good Day 21 in eastern Tokyo several times, aka the Castle of the Demon King (Yanjirou, jokingly called "Maou", Demon King, plays there). We were all incredibly tired and the other German players left, but I decided to play two ft10s that evening, the first one was against Akio. His patient style worked perfectly against me, I felt quite helpless. The second one was against Sho, famous for his strong Leader Oswald. I did a little better than against Akio, but overall wasn't too happy with my play on that day. During the ft10s however AD_Ryan suddenly returned and said he couldn't just leave without supporting me, which I was really grateful for.
We arrived in Nagoya during the evening and decided to relax a bit - it had been raining cats and dogs in Tokyo for days, and we were tired.
As is the tradition, our lunch was Misokatsu at the famous Nagoyan chain Yabaton to regain our strength. Later we went to an Izakaya for dinner, and afterwards we watched the good day 21 stream at our air bnb until we went to bed.
2024/10/11 - Sawakoro Festival Day -1
Sightseeing
Friday, day minus-one of the Sawakoro Festival had started.
We met Sawakoro, Toru and famous Taiwanese player & Tougeki Participant Yukito at a remote bus terminal at noon, near Aratamabashi station. The weather was great and other than us there weren't many people around other than a few seniors. Toru took us to an amazing Tsukemen Restaurant called Sugure that was, once again, Rukkora's recommendation (he is famous as the number one gourmet of the Nagoya KOFXI players).
We were then taken to the harbor by Toru & Sawakoro for some sighteseeing. We climbed the harbor tower for a scenic view and donned captain's uniforms for hilarous fotos (will definitely never been shown publicly). Afterwards we visited the icebreaker / science vessel Fuji, and finally the Aquarium. We took many pictures and had a great time with everyone.
Port24
Then, it was finally time for all of us to go to the holy halls of KOFXI - port24 in Yagoto!
3 Sets of KOFXI were already set up, with two of them set to free play, meaning we could pay a flat fee to use them for an hour. A good amount of local players were already there: my team's leader Miekazu, Hokuto, Sana, Rukkora, Zone, Arata and Yakimeshi. We each sat down on different cabs, switching with everyone from time to time. I had a good start in casuals and managed to get a few wins in against most of them and felt that i leveled up again, which was nice after the horrors I had to endure at good day 21.

Welcome Party
The fun began a bit later though - Sawakoro had organized a welcoming party for Yukito and us at a nearby Izakaya, with most players attending: the Germans, Yukito, Rukkora, Zone, Sana, Arata, Miekazu, Yakimeshi, Toru and Sawakoro. Only a handful of players remained at port24, with their thirst for battle stronger than their thirst for beer. Forgive the fact that some of the images are blurry, there's a good reason - it was all you can drink and eat. To Antser's surprise, he was presented by Miekazu with a personalized mug with all his characters on them, just like the other German players received the year before. It also turned out that the only one of the entire German crew that liked Nankotsu (chicken cartilage) was me - it is my newfound love, especially if it's deep-fried & spicy, it goes so well with beer.
Just before the party, arit & AD_Ryan used the opportunity to hand over a present for TORU, their team leader, in thanks for organizing everything: arit had made a Vanessa statue with Toru's colors, in his signature style (where you can't tell if it is weird by accident or by intention):
Miekazu's KOFXI history
Miekazu and me talked a lot, despite the language barrier, and I learned many things about how the KOFXI scene around him had developed.
Miekazu started playing KOF with 97 and 98. He had a side job during that time and mostly played in small game centers, all by himself, but eventually stopped. At around 2001, he started playing again, and eventually a good friend of his won a big tournament for KOF2002 (as far as Miekazu can remember, it must have been "Duelling the KOF"). It was through him that Miekazu was able to level up his gameplay and become more serious. He started playing XI when it released, but it wasn't until 2011 that things got more interesting. That was the year that Sawakoro contacted and "reactivated" him. During that time, Sawakoro still lived in Osaka, and already played with U-rasia and Nori. Miekazu was able to win a tournament in 2012, the same tournament that was won in 2011 by U-rasia. This greatly motivated him and gave him confidence that the players from Mie prefecture (close to Nagoya, where Miekazu lives) can keep up with all the other strong players. Miekazu's team around that time was Kula/Kim/Oswald(L). He then tried out K' after seeing how strong U-rasia's K' was, and realized how much fun the character is, eventually switching him in for Kim. He also picked up Vanessa, mainly because she was his main character in KOF2002, but also because Toru (no. 1 Vanessa Leader player) taught him how to use her.
Miekazu also told a bit about how the atmosphere was in he beginning, when everybody had to get to know each other still - TSR, Miekazu, Toru and Arthur (asa-p) played together on release, and didn't talk much with each other at first, but they all became friends once Miekazu organized a tournament to promote the game. Shingo on the other hand was a 98 player during that time, and only picked up XI a little later. He was incredibly fast in learning the game due to his strong 98 fundamentals and was at top level within one month.
Eventually our conversation switched to the present day, and Miekazu and me were contemplating the different styles of the strongest players. Miekazu pointed out that Nori plays a calculating style, Yanjirou plays without pause and U-rasia is a master of the quick shift system, to which I added that Sawakoro is a master of preserving his characters and exploiting the timer and judgement to the fullest. We both agreed that there is no clear best way to play that game, and this, among many other things, is one of the reasons we love it so much - there is no easily identifiable "perfect" play.
I also briefly talked to Yukito, asking him how the XI scene in Taiwan looks like, and if there are any places left to play at. Unfortunately, it appears there aren't, and he is the only active XI-player left. After this conversation I found it all the more commendable that Yukito makes the trip to the Sawakoro Festival every year, with no one to train with at home - he just loves the game and the players that much.
Back to Port24
With most of us now feeling the effects of the party, I choose to switch to my patented Oswald/Duck/K' team, reserved for when I am drunk, and just like last year, did way better than I should have. Then again, this is no surprise considering how easy Duck is compared to Vanessa...
We played until just before closing time, catching the 2nd to last train home to our air bnb.
2024/10/12 - Sawakoro Festival Day 1 - Big Team Battle Day
Arrival & Lunch
The first proper day of the Sawakoro Festival had started, with the big East vs West team battle scheduled for the evening. We arrived at around noon, and already, Rock, Tobidogu-San and Yanjirou from the Tokyo/Chiba area and GRID from Osaka were there, playing matches. Over the course of the day, more and more players would arrive, each distributing sweets they brought with them from their areas.
Shortly after arriving, we went to lunch - finally it was time for Fukurou! This is the famous Mazesoba restaurant around the corner from Port24 that many of the XI-players go to. Mazesoba is my favorite dish in all of Japan, and I am not alone: Antser, our first-timer, also declared it his favorite.
Casuals
Afterwards, we joined the fray as soon as we could, eager to fight everyone. Port24 staff meanwhile had set up a full 7 versus setups, with the few that didn't have the boss time unlocks yet being clearly marked, to avoid surprises. Yukito sat down and started destroying people with his absurdly strong Clark - this character proved to be a completely insurmountable obstacle for all of us Germans. Whenever he would pick another point character, I had a chance to win a match here and there, but against his Clark, I was OCVed more often than not. I also watched U-rasia play, and for the first time ever, saw a use for Oswald's 2C, which I thought to be a utterly useless normal before: he used it to punish a whiffed Ralf upper, cancelled into 2363214P.
When I asked Sawakoro about BZR would make it to the Festival, he said he was tied up with work, and I was a bit disappointed. But as it turned out, I was once again tricked by BZR - he loves to play pranks. Knowing that Sawakoro told me he wouldn't make it, he hid hid behind a cab as we were coming in until I turned the corner, surprising me once again. Little did they know I would get my revenge on the next day... Needless to say, I played many matches with BZR and watched him play whenever I could - and he was in top form that day. He is the only player to rival, or maybe even surpass U-rasia when it comes to technical characters.
We also had a present prepared for Sawakoro: As everyone knows, his unrivaled skill with Griffon is the sole reason the character got elevated from a bottom 9 character to an actually strong, high-tier character, and Griffon and Sawakoro stand synonymous for many (note: I accidentally type "Sawakoro" sometimes in the wiki when I mean to write Griffon, not making this up). I did some research because I had a hunch, and it turned out that there exists a region in the North-East of Germany called Pommern, that has a very special sigil: a red Griffon. Since Sawakoro has strong ties to Germany due to our friendship that now spawns back years, we thought this was a good present:
Big Team Battle
Evening approached fast, and it was time for the big East vs West team battle.
The theme of the team battle was inspired by the preferences of the different areas of Japan: in eastern Japan, the strong players have a preference for K', whereas in the West, Ryo is much more commonly played in the top teams. Therefore, East was represented by K', and West by Ryo. All players were distributed into those two teams, and each team was assigned a leader: Yanjirou for East, Gian for West. After all players were drawn and assigned, the team leaders then proceeded to order the players, with a tendency to put the strongest towards the very end.

The tournament started and everybody was gathering behind their respective sides of the stream cab. I was assigned to the Eastern team, as the 4th player. Nuu from team West beat our first 3 players, and it was my turn. I managed to rack up 6 wins, having to play against fellow Germans arit and AD_Ryan on the way. I was eventually eliminated in a close match against Adelheid expert Kani, leaving the stage with a score I was happy with. As the tournament proceeded, everyone was getting more and more hype, cheering for their players to do their best. A few personal highlights as the tournament progressed were Roger vs Sagawa, the close matches of Yamate vs GRID & Yukito, BZR's Vanessa vs Shingo's Kula or this crazy, improvised ace from U-rasia. I will not spoil anymore about the matches beyond those, make sure to watch and enjoy the tournament from the link below, they were incredible!
After the team tournament was over, casuals started again and everybody played for as long as they could, trying to make the most out of every second. The quality of casual matches on the stream was very high, so make sure to check the videos if you haven't!

2024/10/13 - Sawakoro Festival Day 2 - Main Event
Arrival, Gifts, Casuals
The day of the main event had come, and we once again arrived at port24 at around 11. Even more players than the day before were already present, every single cabinet was occupied. Some fresh faces were also there that hadn't arrived yet on the day before such as Ryoji. There were also a few notable absences: Pi from Korea planned on coming but ultimately didn't, Kyuntakuya couldn't make time and Spookie was only present on Saturday and had to skip Sunday.
The casual matches before the tournament can be found here: 2024.10.13 KOFXI Casuals before the Tournament (KOF11 大会前野試合) 【ポート24八事】
Miekazu, who was to team with me and Antser the day after, surprised the German players with presents - custom towels with our names and our signature characters! I knew of it beforehand, because we planned it together.
However, we also had a very special present for Miekazu: a lego figure in his likeness, including his "kiss the future" tagline on the shirt, "XI" on the sleeves, a mini-ace of spades (Oswald) and a mini-spiderman comic (he likes Marvel).
We also finally unpacked our completely unreasonable amount of German candy we brought with us - it was too much for the table and we had to split it over two days.
Teams & Team Drawing
After the casuals, the tournament finally started in the late afternoon: a total of 49 players in 16 teams had to be split between blocks A and B. Over the course of the previous days, I had been probing players already about which teams they would register, so I was aware of a few super powerful combinations of players, and couldn't wait to hear the drawing. Sawakoro as the tournament host handled the drawing of teams and the announcement of pairings via microphone. Everybody was getting excited when they heared their pairing, or whenever a particularly strong team was matched up with another strong one. You can find the live pairing at the beginning of the A-Block video, here.
It was Miekazu's idea to have mixed teams this year between German and Japanese players, so we came up with these two teams:
Team Bindung/Kizuna
- Miekazu(L)
- Antser
- ATG
Team Inuyama Beef Sushi
- Toru(L)
- arit
- AD_Ryan
Once all teams had been drawn, both blocks ended up with their fair share of strong teams, but particularly block B was brutal: it had Sawakoro/Yukito/Zakuroman, U-rasia/Kentucky/Nori and Yanjirou/Kodsuka/GRID. These were three of the five strongest teams in the whole tournament, the other two being Shingo's & Gian's teams, who ended up in A block, where our German/Japanese mixed teams were also placed in.
The Tournament begins
Warning: Spoilers from here!
After the drawing, A block and B block began to take place simultaneously. A few days before the tournament, Sawakoro informed us that a second stream will likely not be available, which was unfortunate, however ultimately a solution was found and Rock was able to stream the B block in the venue using his youtube account:
- Sawakoro Festival 2024 3on3 A-block, A-block loser's & grand finals
- Sawakoro Festival 2024 3on3 B-block & B-block loser's, hosted by Rock
First Rounds
From the mixed teams, Inuyama Beef Sushi was paired up against Shingo/Tetsu/Ryotsu and had to play before Bindung. arit and AD_Ryan lost to Tetsu, the latter in a close match. Toru defeated Tetsu, kept up a good fight but ultimately lost to Shingo. Bindung was next, and our first matchup was against Yamate/Sagawa/Tacchi. Yamate defeated Antser, after which I was next. I am very confident with Oswald against Vanessa, since it is a relatively easy matchup for him - abuse 2B and forward roll and it becomes very hard for vanessa to do much at all. However, Yamate's raw skill with point Vanessa proved way too much for me. The pressure was intense, causing me to miss several inputs that cost me my Oswald, and from there on he overwhelmed me quickly. Next up was Miekazu, who did much better than me, but ultimately lost after baiting saving shift with his leader Oswald thrice with Yamate not falling for it. Oswald is weak to saving shift, so this was a high-level play, and a high-level reading of the situation in turn by Yamate.
Both mixed teams where knocked into the loser bracket and had to wait for their next matches. As both A and B block continued, I moved over to the B-block to watch matches, and came just in time to catch a highlight: Round 2 had begun, and U-rasia/Kentucky/Nori were facing Yukito/Zakuroman/Sawakoro! This matchup was the first sign that U-rasia was in his tournament mode the whole day, where is even stronger than usual.
Afterwards, the next highlight took place in B block: Yanjirou/Kodsuka/GRID clashed with Tobidogu-San/Rock/Saginomiya. Just like U-rasia, Yanjirou showed everyone how well prepared and determined he was to take the tournament.
Then, U-rasia/Kentucky/Nori faced Yanjirou/Kodsuka/GRID in the B block finals. This could very well be described as an early grand finals game, as both of these two teams were favorites to take the whole tournament. In an exciting match, Yanjirou's team however emerged victorious, winning the B-block and sending U-rasia's team into the B-block loser bracket.
Meanwhile, Gian/Arata/Ozuma ermeged victorious from A-block, with both Shingo's and Tobidogu-San's teams ending up in the A-block loser bracket.
- A-Block winner: Gian/Arata/Ozuma
- B-Block winner: Yanjirou/Kodsuka/GRID
The Loser Bracket aka Loser's Resurrection
On the B block station, the losers bracket started, and I stayed to watch until we had to play in the A-block again. All of the strong teams in B-block that lost now had to face each other again, this time with elimination on the line. U-rasia/Kentucky/Nori defeated Yamate/Sagawa/Tacchi and Sawakoro/Yukito/Zakuroman defeated Makotsu/Hokuto/Ryuumi, after which they had to face each other once again for a rematch. I had the honor of commenting that matchup, it can be found here. Sawakoro was able to get revenge from U-rasia in an exciting match, but Kentucky managed to defeat Sawakoro, then losing to Zakuroman. Ultimately, Nori turned it around for the team however and won both against Zakuroman and Yukito, eliminating them and winning the B-block losers tournament.
Meanwhile, the A-block loser's tournament was running. Inuyama Beef Sushi had to face egaoGian/Operaza/Roger and ultimately lost in a bit of an upset. Bindung didn't fare much better and was OCved by everybody's favorite zoner/bullet hell player Tobidogu-San. I know the matchup against Kensou very well, but I didn't even get through his King, which is a character that is not played at all in Germany, not to mention his Jazu, who is on a whole different level. The highlight of the A-block loser bracket were the finals: Tetsu/Ryotsu/Shingo vs Saginomiya/Rock/Tobidogu-San. Saginomiya was first, taking out Tetsu and losing (in style) to Shingo. Saginomiya is famous for his very strong Iori (make sure to check the casual vids, i remember him destroying a few top players on stream). Next was Tobidogu-San, then Rock, both losing to Shingo, whose team advanced victorious from the A-block loser bracket.
- A-block loser's winner: Shingo/Ryotsu/Tetsu
- B-block loser's winner: U-rasia/Kentucky/Nori
Semi Finals
The time had come to settle the semi finals between the four remaining teams. In reverse order, B-block played before A-block: U-rasia/Kentucky/Nori played against Yanjirou/Kodsuka/GRID for the second time. Both teams unexpectedly sent in their strongest players first: U-rasia and Yanjirou. Whenever these two play, everybody is quiet and watches in awe. U-rasia played aggressively and skilfully, not giving Yanjirou many chances to act. He then won against GRID, followed by Kodsuka, OCVing them and securing his team a spot in the grand finals.
Next was Gian/Arata/Ozuma vs Shingo/Ryotsu/Tetsu. Tetsu first played against arata, using a nice saving shift bait with Ryo (623C SC 2363214C), but ultimately losing in a close match. Ryotsu then took out both Arata and Ozuma, leaving it to Gian to make a comeback happen. Ryotsu won the point Kula matchup, doing very well against Gian, even forcing him to saving shift his Ryo out. Gian's Gato however was so brutally strong that he managed to gain some space and even tag in Ryo again, eventually winning him the match. Now only Shingo and Gian were left - two of the strongest players in West Japan, both playing the "port24 team" of Kula/Ryo/Gato(L). Gian won the point Kula matchup, But Shingo's Gato was able to get a great amount of damage in, and the match felt really even. Eventually, Shingo got a good life lead with Ryo, but Gian's Gato proved once again too strong, and Gian's team moved into the grand finals.
Grand Finals
Video: Sawakoro Festival 2024 Grand finals
As the grand finals were about to begin, the last players dropped their casual matches and a huge crowd was forming on each side of the stream cabinet. Rallying behind their champions, most of the Nagoyan players were standing behind Arata/Ozuma/Gian, with many of the others standing either on U-rasia/Kentucky/Nori's side or around the stream station, eagerly anticipating the matches.
Arata first had to face Kentucky's skillful Whip, which proved too strong. She first eliminated Kula, then almost Gato before she finally was KOed, but the damage was done - Kentucky had an untouched, 3-stock leader Athena left, plus his backup Yuri, and managed to win the first match. Next up was Ozuma vs Kentucky. Ozuma's Gai managed to deal a good amount of damage against Whip, but got KOed anyway. Kenta managed to whittle down Ozuma's K' until landing a skilful combo into Athena's LDM and almost killing K'. Right after this was a small window of opportunity where Ozuma had 2 skill stocks and could have landed a stun- or kill combo, and the chance presented itself, but he unfortunately dropped the combo. Ozuma carried on however and almost managed a crazy comeback with Gato, but Kenta took the match with a wakeup j.C in reaction to Ozuma Gato's 214X.
Now, only Gian was left in his team, while the other team still had all 3 players left. Gian managed to kill off Kenta's Whip with his Kula in the point matchup, which is a crucial step in defeating his team. Kenta managed to land several supers with Athena and slowly finished off Ryo, running out of Super Stock in the process. Once again, it was up to Gian's Gato to make a comeback happen. A double tenryu against Yuri managed to get him in the lead, and a tatsukiba against athena's dive eventually won him the match, although it sounded like he never expected it to fully hit to begin with - everybody was surprised and Gian snatched the mic and commented on that last hit right after the match.
Next up was U-Rasia: time for a real boss battle. Many blows were traded in the point matchup and the crowd was cheering for Gian with every hit. Eventually, Gian's Kula emerged victorious against Oswald. Gian kept up the pressure and managed to land a risky rayspin on block> delay slide hit> QS Gato for good damage against U-rasia's Kula. U-rasia in turn was able to QS to K' for a nice chain drive combo, proceeding to KO Gato with an instant overhead j.C>623A>236236A. A missed 623C should spell doom for his K' however, which was stunned, then KOed by Gian's Ryo>Kula>Ryo combo. One last incoming crossup and Gian had taken the match.
Now only Gian and Nori were left, the very last match of the event was to begin, and one of the best matches of the entire tournament. Nori played a patient game with Ralf against Kula, always keeping the perfect distance for his normals to hit, outside of ray spin range. The matchup was even, with Gian eventually shifting from Kula to Gato to finish off Ralf. Nori ended up in a pinch in the corner against Gian's Kula with his own and had to saving shift to Gato before Gian had to invest any resources, which now gave the advantage to Gian. Fortunately, Nori was able to finally KO Kula with his Gato, and with great awareness decided not to risk doing mid-screen okizeme against Ryo (who has no landing recovery from a DOWN!), instead choosing to tag in Kula again. A well-timed guard cancel got Nori out of Gian's Gato's tenryu, and a saving shift counter hit shortly after allowed him to get some damage in. The timer began creeping closer to zero, and both players were losing life at the same rate, the match was close to reach an exciting conclusion, with Nori having a judgement lead with 4 seconds left. Gian however managed to hit with an instant overhead j.D in the Gato mirror match, KOing Nori's Gato, snatching away the judgement lead at the last second. An incredible match and tournament had come to an end: Arata/Ozuma/Gian had won the tournament!

The after-party
After-Tournament casuals video here: 2024.10.13 KOFXI Casuals after the Tournament(KOF11 大会後野試合) 【ポート24八事】
The evening was not over yet though - just like last year, a big after party was organized in an Izakaya on the other side of the street. It was once again all you can eat and drink, and once again Shingo and Toru prepared games for everybody to play.
The seating order. "BTG" is ATG's brother, the Japanese players invented the name for him (he doesn't play XI).
We were seated together in a cluster with our closest Japanese friends, and a few that speak particularly good English (shoutouts to Sana!). But before our first drink, it was time for a toast. To everybody's surprise, this year it was AD_Ryan's turn to hold one, in Japanese. Miekazu secretly planned it with us, so nobody knew except the Germans and him. See AD_Ryan's top tier performance (and his "ORE MO" here):
AD_Ryan's toast
Everybody was enjoying themselves, and many players immediately stood up, taking their glasses to roam around and chat. BTG immediately made friends with Sana and GRID, the latter of which we found out shares our passion for old tokusatsu shows.
Miekazu, Tobidogu-San, AD_Ryan, GRID
Then, it was once again time for games! First up was Toru, who just like last year had a great idea how to please the XI players, who are, at their core, all competitive creatures: everybody in the room, at the same time, had to play rock, paper, scissors with him, with an additional twist: we all used the German words for it: "Sching,Schang,Schong!" (Sidenote: Arit later approached me and told me that I should probably have taught them "Schnick,Schnack,Schnuck" instead, but I always found that lame, long live the weird, chinese sounding words!)
Next up was Shingo, and finally we all got to play a game appropriate for our age: BINGO! It was funny hearing one player after another declaring "RIICHI!" as if we were playing Mahjong. I managed to win a KFC voucher.
Everybody was having a great time, and the overall drunkenness had climbed to a level that I felt that now, finally, my chance for revenge had come: I casually dropped in a conversation that arit actually used to be a pro wrestler and showed everybody a picture of Earthquake (not the Samurai Spirits Earthquake, the WWF wrestler), and people actually believed me until I cleared it up, which was hilarious.
Not arit.
The after-after party
Once our time at the Izakaya was up, all players returned to port24 for more matches. It was again time for drunk Duck until the night finally came to an end, and the first real good byes were said - many players did return on the last and final day of the Sawakoro Festival however - the bonus day.
2024/10/14 - Sawakoro Festival Bonus Day
Monday was Sports Day in Japan, so a huge chunk of the players attending the Sawakoro Festival were still around. Though there were no official tournaments on that day, several smaller events took place. First of all, Ozuma organized a mini-tournament and I was warned that he liked to come up with crazy rules. He distributed players into different teams and gave everyone a paper slip with an objective. Mine can be seen here:
"No Main team, play Leader Duck" / Toru dressing up as a Ninja? / U-rasia having to play Hayate, aka his "private airplane"
It was super funny, some players had rules like "only female characters" or "do not pick colors with the same buttons as your opponents" and so on. I ultimately picked Ryo/Adel/Duck and tried my best to land Duck's LDM, with no success - but a lot of fun along the way.
There were two ft10s held on the evening: Sawakoro vs fellow team mate Zakuroman and me vs Toru, all in the same, humongous stream file that also contained casual matches. Toru and me both play Leader Vanessa+Oswald, with the difference that he plays him 2nd and I choose to play him as a point. My ft10 went really badly, for several reasons - first of all, Toru was absolutely spot on with his Kula Shoryus, which made it super hard for me to get in with my Oswald. In casuals before, I felt more confident, but he switched gears and totally dominated me. Secondly, I got distracted somewhat early in the ft10 and it affected my mindset - I simply wasn't able to recover and regain my composure.
What followed after were a lot of casuals, with everyone trying to get in more matches before they finally had to leave. There were some high-quality casual matches in the stream that I recommend checking out, so click through and enjoy - for those in the know, you'll easily spot the top players by their teams and colors. The time had also come for us, and we suddenly realized we had to leave - we were flying to Hokkaido next morning, for the first time ever.
Sawakoro Festival 2024 had finally come to an end, and it was just as wonderful as the year before. Right at the end, Miekazu and me were already discussing what kind of teams we could set up for next year, getting excited about the possibilities of different combinations of players. It is clear the fire was burning inside everybody to keep doing this, and it was even clearer that we will be back in 2025!
Thanks for reading, I hope you were able to feel a bit of the excitement we all got to experience, and a very special thank you to our friends Sawakoro, Miekazu and Toru for organizing Sawakoro Festival 2024 and everything around it!
- ATG
Epilogue
Afterwards, the Germans went to Hokkaido: we ate the best fish ever in Sapporo, then rode a bus to Noboribetsu, enjoying sulfurous hot springs plus traditional clothes and food at a Ryokan, and finally had terrible burgers in Hakodate (damn you, Lucky Pierrot!).
Afterwards, we returned to Tokyo for a few more days and met Rock, Tobidogu-San and Tacchi one last time, who took us to a special place - Onihei, a traditional Japanese restaurant with an absurdly large selection of Sake. The twist however was that famous KOF player Ogosho works there, who welcomed us and gave us food and drink recommendations. The evening was wonderful, and we will surely return!
